Managing Innovation

Optimising the Power of New Ideas:

In this program, participants will come to see the management of innovation as a powerful and practical way to create value by selecting and exploiting the best new ideas-both for improvement and for radical change in products, processes, positioning, or paradigm.

Participants will learn to incorporate innovation management skills and processes into their jobs by absorbing the results of research on exceptionally innovative organisations and put that knowledge to work through structured activities, cases, and skill practice. They will work through an innovation opportunity by simulating a stage-gate* process and will practice many of the skills and tools used by the most successful innovation managers.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to assess their own skills and the culture, structure, and processes relating to innovation in their organisation, comparing them to the best practices of benchmarked organisations.

Participants will learn from benchmarked companies some of the key dilemmas encountered in the process of managing innovation and will develop solutions that they can put into practice. They will create a plan to move their own skills forward and to create a more innovation-supportive structure and culture within their organisations and teams.

Objectives and Outcomes:

Participants will:

  • Describe how innovation could benefit their team or business unit and the wider organisation
  • Identify organisational and individual innovation capabilities and barriers
  • Set up and run a simple step-by step process for introducing value-creating innovations
  • Undertake a structured program of self-development to improve their innovation management skills
  • Assess when and where innovation is needed and when other approaches would be more useful
  • Apply selected best practices in innovation to their organisation

Who Should Participate?
